In February, Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) announced his candidacy for governor of Florida in 2026.

The conservative firebrand received an early endorsement from President Donald Trump, before Donalds even announced his candidacy.

Donalds is travelling the state and meeting with citizens at townhalls and other events. He recently shared a heartwarming moment that happened at a townhall on Thursday night.
Donalds shared on X, “Who is the REAL Donald Trump?””Last night, at a speech in Hardee County, I met a woman named Dorothy from Fort Meade & she told me she loves our president.””We sent President Trump a selfie & I wrote him, ‘Mr. President, Dorothy Gordon from Fort Meade, FL is 89 & loves you.’”

“Within 20 minutes, President Trump called me back & the first thing he said was, ‘Tell her I love her!’ He then asked to be put on Speaker & addressed all 500 people in attendance.”

“This is the REAL Donald Trump.”

“This is the PEOPLE’S PRESIDENT.”

“This is what the media will NEVER SHOW YOU.”

In a video shared by Donalds, he  told the crowd, “Dorothy comes over and she goes, ‘Sir, I love President Trump, and he’s been trying to meet me for a long time.’  I said, You know what? This what I’m going to do.’ I said, ‘Because of what you said, let’s take a picture.’”

“So I took a picture. I took a selfie, and I said, ‘I’m going to send it to President Trump.’ I did. She probably thought I was just being nice, but I really did send a picture. I sent what I sent to President Trump…this is a copy, this is what I sent to him. It reads,’ Mr. President, Dorothy Gordon from Fort Mead, Florida, is 89 and loves you.’”

“Then a funny thing happened. I’m over there at the photo line, and my phone is ringing. I’m like, well, wait a minute. Daniel is standing right there so it’s not him. I’m like, Uh-oh and I forgot who was in line to get a photo. I got stopped dead in my tracks.”

“I pulled my phone up. I’m like, Oh, it’s the president? I pick it up and I just talk to him. He goes, ‘Tell her I love her.’  I text you. I sent you the text that I sent him. So I sent it to you. Then we’re talking. Because President Trump, once he’s there, he’ll talk to you, ask you about a bunch of different things.”

“He asked how the campaign for governor was doing. I said, ‘Mr. President, it’s going great. It’s going wonderful.” He goes, ‘ It looks like it’s going really good for you.’ I’m like, ‘Sir, we’re working really hard.’ Then he goes, ‘Where are you now?’ I said, ‘Sir, I’m in Hardee County.’ I said, ‘There’s 500 people in this room, and they all love you.’”

“He goes, ‘Oh, yeah?’ He goes, ‘Put me on speaker right now.’”

“So I come running over, and I’m like, ‘Sue, where’s the wife?’ She’s like, ‘What’s going on?’ She dropped her biscuit on the floor, rolling down, down. We don’t know what’s going on. She said, ‘What’s going on?’”

“I need a microphone,’ so we’re over here trying to figure out what way. The President’s like, ‘Am I on? Can they hear me?’ I’m like, ‘Hold on, Mr. President, we’re almost done.’ Then you heard from the President of the United States.”

Donalds then shared a clip from President Trump’s call.

“Everybody, I got the President of the United States on the call.”

President Trump then spoke to the crowd from Donalds phone, “I’m with you. I just want to tell you, Byron is a fantastic guy. He’s a hard worker, and he’s going to do really a tremendous job. I hope you’re all enjoying yourself. I’m out working right now, making a big speech tonight, but I wanted to call in and say hello. You just take care of yourselves.”

“We love you all. Oh my God. All right, we’re going to get this over.”

The crowd roared their approval.

Donalds then pointed to Dorothy Gordon in the crowd and said, “You know what? He called because of you.”
